ASRS

In light of on-going tragedies, it has become evident that the chaotic and unpredictable nature of active shooting incidents inside a facility often hinders law enforcement from making swift, informed decisions. This delay can cost valuable time and lives. To address this critical issue, ASRS provides law enforcement with an innovative tool that accurately pinpoints the shooter's location within a compound. By leveraging real-time input from students and faculty members inside the building, the app enables officers to develop a tactical plan before arriving on-site, ultimately improving response times and effectiveness.

Our goal with ASRS [whisper 'sos'] is to:

-> Develop a system to combat active shooters:

> Located the approximate location of active shooter

> Assist in evacuating civilians (emphasize on campus shooting scenarios)

> Live report within campus during active shooting

> Speed dial law enforcement when encounter active shooter

Context

Robb Elementary School Incident

On May 24, 2022, 19 children and two adults were killed and 16 injured in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. It was the deadliest school shooting since 2012, when a gunman shot and killed 26 people as young as 6 years old at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Law enforcement officials have been criticized for their actions in response to the shooting; they waited 78 minutes on-site before breaching the classroom to engage Ramos.

During the active shooting incidents, at least one law enforcement agency was aware that children were still at risk. In one particular case, multiple children made desperate 911 calls while 19 officers remained stationed in a hallway outside the classroom for over an hour. In any emergencies, time is extremely valuable and I wonder how design can help assist law enforcements and save lives.

As a former Police Explorer with the Orange Police Department [Post #266], I had the opportunity to assist law enforcement agencies while gaining hands-on experience in police work. During my time in the program, I developed a strong understanding of laws, procedures, and police ethics. I actively participated in ride-alongs with officers, observing real-world policing firsthand. Additionally, I underwent extensive training in self-defense, de-escalation techniques, and emergency response, including active shooter scenarios.

Research + Ideology

Time is dire…

How can we help first responders to locate the shooter faster?

With the implementation of our app and its tagging system, officers will gain a clearer picture of the shooter's approximate location, drastically reducing response times from an hour to an estimated 3 to 10 minutes, in this case (normally will be from 9 to 7 minutes with more effective evacuation plans). This improvement could mean the difference between life and death, providing first responders with the critical information they need to take immediate action.

Despite the implementation of safety drills, tragic losses continue to occur. When an armed threat arises, police are the ultimate responders. However, the role of students and teachers extends beyond simply hiding, running, or fighting. By staying alert and maintaining communication with law enforcement, they can provide real-time updates, offering critical information that helps officers locate and neutralize the shooter more effectively.

User Testing

Through our usability testing, we discovered that participants appreciated the engaging user interface and zone map of our prototype, but found its text-heavy layout and limited interactivity challenging. Our team aims to blend the original page's strengths with our prototype, improving areas of weakness.

By employing affinity diagramming and the UFT method, we have transformed our test data into actionable insights for the prototype's future development, prioritizing key solutions and thoroughly exploring necessary compromises.
